Folk omens on December 1 - Day of Roman and Plato

Popular names and traditions of the day

On this day, we closely watched natural phenomena, since it was believed that today it is possible to determine what the weather will be like in winter.

Church 1 honors the memory of the holy martyrs Roman and Plato, who suffered for their faith in the fourth faith. It is known that Plato was the brother of the martyr Antiochus — together they were born in the family of pious Christians and received excellent education, after which they began to preach Christianity literally at the beginning of their youth.

In particular, Plato very often met with the pagans and talked with them in order to convert them. This happened during the reign of Emperor Agrippin, who was notable for his intolerance towards adherents of Christian doctrine.

It is not surprising that he ordered the arrest of Plato and arranged a court in which he demanded that the preacher renounce his convictions. Plato refused to do this, for which he was tortured and killed.

In addition, one honors the memory of St. Roman, who was martyred together with the lad Varul.

This happened during the persecutions organized by the Emperor Maximilian against Christians. Roman himself at that time was a deacon in the city of Caesarea, and once met an eparch going to a pagan feast.

Then Roman began to persuade him to renounce his faith, after which he refused to do something and betrayed the preacher to a great number of tortures. Varul, who was also a Christian and could not stand aside, passed by.

Then he, too, was captured and tortured along with Roman.

Interestingly, in Russia, the martyrs prayed for material well-being. Therefore, in the morning before the start of any work, they would certainly go to church, because they believed that after that, there would be money in the family.

At this time, one in the field no longer worked, but the peasants knew what to do. For example, various crafts, and in particular, wood carving, were common. Khokhloma flourished, Dymkovo toy, bone carving.

The peasants also engaged in the manufacture of dishes, tiles, tiles, and, used for this special technique.

In the manufacture of dishes used linden, which is easily polished and bent.

Ancestors believed that linden is able to protect a person from evil.
